Panpa Bulletin : August September 2007
62 PANPA Bulletin August-September 2007 Getty Images photographer Chris McGrath captured this absorbing image of Gareth Jones as he com- petes in the men's 10m platform diving final during day ten of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. "The diving venue was pretty ugly, and I wondered what it would look like if I cleaned it up by shooting a really wide pic- ture panning the whole end wall and all the diving platforms. My first attempt was really blurry -- but the colours and streaking that it produced started me thinking, 'I need to get a diver in sharp focus amongst all that'. "I think I got the picture on my sixth go. "At the end of the round I had a good look at it on my camera ... it was sharp! I really hadn't given myself much hope at one-fifth a second, handheld! But here it was. So I raced back to the editor and said, 'I think I've got a picture!" A well rounded shooter, McGrath has fo- cused his attention on covering news, sport and feature stories. He was on the scene at the Waterfall Train disaster in Sydney, the Marriot Hotel bombing in Jakarta and has experienced the glitz and glamour of Australian fashion week. He ventured into the outback in 2002 to cover the effects of drought and was knocked to the ground by a speeding bull while shooting bull racing in Indonesia. His passion for sports photography has seen him in the front row during the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ma- jor golf tournaments across Asia Pacific, the 2003 Rugby World cup and the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. More recently, he covered the Tsunami in 2004/2005 and the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. This photo and others by Getty photog- raphers around the world appear in the annual Getty Images Year in Focus 06. We have four copies of the 2006 book to give away to PANPA Bulletin readers.
