Panpa Bulletin : August September 2007
awards showcase PANPA 2007 Marketer of the Year Award WINNER Alison Bakunowich, The Sydney Morning Herald, NSW, Australia Judges' comments: "Thinking outside the square is one of the greatest strengths a 21st century marketer can have. "Cause marketing" is often rele- gated to the bottom of the pile because it does not always hit the bottom line. In this winner's case, some of these misconceptions have been challenged to the core. In fact, a very serious publica- tion steeped in history not only changed colour to take on some significant causes, it positively embraced them. HIGHLY COMMENDED Doug Kingston -- Townsville Bulletin, Queensland & Signe Shorter -- Tweed Newspaper Company, Queensland WINNER Karen Evans -- Finance Manager, APN News and Media, New Zealand Judges' comments: "Since 1988 the 18 Winners of the Hegarty Prize have all demonstrated their potential to become cross functional executives in the dynamic newspa- per environment. Many now command senior roles within newspaper companies. This year's winner reflects this capacity through a combination of rapid and impressive successes in a diverse range of roles. The winner has a finance background yet has managed to achieve success in areas like customer contact change management -- a project that involved improving internal and external services to customers of 14 daily newspa- pers and more than 60 community and country titles. The winner was iden- tified within their own company as a person who has general management ability and was awarded the Young Executive of the Year Award in 2007. In addition to being responsible for a $50 million revenue line, the winner is also studying for CPA recognition, following the completion of a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) degree in 2004." HIGHLY COMMENDED Rebecca Lang, Editor, Hawkesbury Gazette, NSW Australia PANPA Bulletin August-September 2007 43 The results were exceptional -- raising money, securing lucrative sponsorship and advertising dollars, increasing circulation, gaining massive community participation and influencing change. We have seen the true power of a newspaper brand being used to inform, influence and motivate the community it serves. The winner also managed a project that took a moribund product and turned it into a publication that attract- ed 90,000 buyers and more than $1 million in advertising sales. The winner ran the project across all disciplines of the publishing operation, coordinating printing, distribution and across three mastheads. Here we have seen capably demonstrated the work of an integrated marketer in an integrated newspaper company." PANPA 2007 Hegarty Prize
