Panpa Bulletin : August September 2007
WINNER The Age Print Centre Melbourne, Victoria, Australia ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY SPORT WINNER South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Photographer K.Y. Cheng Judges' comments: "The players, isolated against the muted back- ground of green and pastels are frozen in an image of athletic battle -- two sides, each hoping to overcome the other yet locked into a dance as beautiful as any ballet." HIGHLY COMMENDED Hawke's Bay Today, New Zealand Photographer Steven McNicholl WINNER The Dominion Post, New Zealand. Photographer Phil Reid Judges' comments: "Every great image is about a moment, whether subtle or grand. In this photograph it is both at once. The law surrounds him, a foreshadowing of the prison walls that will do likewise following his murder conviction. He had been on parole at the time after spending 14 years in prison for his first murder conviction. Yet, he sits, listening to the proceedings with a faint smirk cross- ing his lips. Wheelchair bound after losing his right leg following a shoot-out with police, one wonders what he is thinking? But, ultimately, it doesn't matter because the court is in control now. The symmetry and colours work together to create a mon- tage with the subtlety of what is hidden yet grandly seen." NEWS HIGHLY COMMENDED The Straits Times, Singapore.
