"The Hunter was caught in the grip of 'Becksmania' in November when the Newcastle Jets soccer club scored a coup by securing a friendly match with the LA Galaxy featuring superstar Dav- id Beckham. Our coverage of the Beckham visit, both in print and online, included can- did shots of him and his teammates around town, several fan posters and extensive previews of the match. We also published the official program for the game and sponsored a Legends' Lounge at Energy Australia Stadium to honour the Hunter Region's great- est players. The 'festival of Beckham' culminated with a capacity crowd of 23,000 turning out for the match. It was a great night for the code in our region and we were delighted to play a part in its success." HERALD, NEWCASTL EDITOR ROGER BROCK EDITORS' CHOICE "There has been an ongoing campaign for getting a regional cancer centre for the Albury-Wodonga region. The government announced a whole sweep of cancer centres early this year and Albury- Wodonga was in the running. We thought we had a pretty sound case given that we are three hours from Melbourne, but unfortunately we missed out on the opportunity. The particular story and front page which had the most impact was a story where we spoke to a couple of oncologists who told us that every week they see 19 new cancer patients. People were shocked and disgusted that we missed out in preference of places that were closer to Melbourne. We have had some rallies and gatherings to talk about the displeasure with the decision that was made and how the cancer centre is something that we have a definite demand. We've lost the battle but not the war." By Kate Gallagher THE BORDER MAIL EDITOR HEATH HARRISON 16 PANPA 2011 Year Book NOVEMBER 26 JULY8
