PANPA 2011 Year Book 7 Joe Talcott President of PANPA Ispent much of my work- ing life in the quick service restaurant industry. The fast-food business is very com- petitive, with thousands of out- lets all working to expand their "share of stomach". Ray Kroc, the founder of the McDonald's chain, was known for telling his team "If I saw a competi- tor drowning, I'd reach down and put a hose in his mouth". The competitive spirit I saw at McDonald's was fierce. But it pales in comparison with news- papers. As newspaper publishers, we relish competition. It fuels our drive for the best work, the exclusive story and/or photo, the scoop. It also drives our advertising departments, competing aggressively for the largest share of spend. And so it should. But, our industry has changed. The way people are using media has changed. And our competitors have changed. Fernando Olmos, creative chairman at JWT Advertising in Europe, told the Cannes Ad- vertising Festival that time had become the new currency and that all marketers were com- peting for people's attention. And that, of course holds true for those of us in the media business as well. Yes, we com- pete with other newspapers. And we compete with other media; radio, outdoor and tel- evision. But we too are com- peting for people's time and attention. We are all battling for "share of waking hours". That means in addition to our historic set of competitors we can now add things like longer commute times, Blackberry e- mail, day care visits, Facebook and Angry Birds! In this environment, the role of an industry association be- comes increasingly important. Newspapers are being por- trayed as "old media", some- times even "dying media". So as counter to our competitive nature as it may be as inde- pendent businesses, we must work together through the Association to make a posi- tive difference for our media. There are many places where we can do this without crossing any competitive lines; enhanc- ing professional excellence, showcasing expertise and best practice, supporting innovation and promoting the benefits of newspapers. The number of competitors has grown and will continue to grow at a rapid pace. Our re- sponse must include industry- cohesive initiatives. This com- ing year, the NPA will work with member publishers to support the industry in new ways and with renewed energy. At the signing of the US Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Franklin recognised how difficult it was to gather a group of competitive colonies in a common goal. He implored those in the room with this statement: "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Good ad- vice in a changing world.
