Ad demand forces press revamp THREE colour presses are left to update as part of a multi-million-dol- lar, two-year program at Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). A total four presses, built by Goss International, will have identical capabilities, including the capacity to colour-print 40 broadsheet pages back-to-back. They will produce 17 newspaper titles in four languages, including the company's flagship daily paper, the Straits Times. SPH, arguably the most entrepre- neurial of the regional newspaper publishers, will also print international editions of the International Herald Tribune, Financial Times and top-selling Japanese dailies, Asahi Shimbun and Nikkei, on the Goss presses each day. The first press went live earlier this year, and production vice-presi- dent Anthony Cheng says Goss has "done a good job, and it will help us complete the remaining presses" by the end of next year. The immediate beneficiary has been the New Paper, a free newspaper that puts out more than 100,000 cop- ies a day, aiming at the young execu- tive market on the island nation. It can now print 80 colour pages back-to-back on the new Goss press installed. It will be able to offer an even brighter coverage of a Singapo- rean passion -- English football. The newspaper presses at the SPH Print Centre, which undertakes com- mercial work and pumps out more than 100 regular magazines and pe- riodicals, will have the current eight 4/1 colour towers converted to 4/4, adding 24 colour couples. Each press will have a full-colour tower configuration to ensure back- to-back colour capabilities for its broadsheet papers. Mr Cheng, who project managed the installation of Goss presses back in 1996, said he believed the Goss Colourliner was a "good press, and over time we have optimised on quality and performance." Advertiser demands had meant the company was "short of back-to- back colour capabilities". He continued: "Adding print- ing couples from Goss is the best solution for us to gain colour capac- ity and retain our competitive edge without having to invest in brand new presses." Additional reporting Goss Web Offset magazine ANGELO Gedult, of APN Print Ellerslie, has won the PrintNZ Apprentice of the Year Award at this year's Pride in Print Awards in Auckland. Mr Gedult represented the reel-fed sector, and came out on top of over 100 apprentices and trainees from different sectors of the en- tire print industry. He told The Bulletin: "The night was excel- lent. I was really emotional. I just didn't expect to win the big prize." The judges were swayed by Angelo's print quality shown in the March 14 edition of the Herald on Sunday, as well as his stellar per- formance in his Print Management Diploma, in which he secured 100 percent for both Level 2 and Level 4. Joan Grace, CEO OF PrintNZ and CMITO, said Angelo was a stand-out in this year's tough competition. "His technical skills, his problem solving ability and the goals he has set himself for the future, were some of Angelo's striking quali- ties. "Angelo made the comment that 'what the industry gives you, you need to give back' -- something that really stuck in the minds of the judges. "When talking about his training Angelo was very complimentary about the support from APN -- the extra training and opportuni- ties to work in different sections of the busi- ness,"Ms Grace said. Dan Blackbourn, general manager of oper- ations at APN Print, said: "Angelo's win shows the commitment APN Print has to its appren- tices. We have now won this award twice in the last three years. "APN Print's aim is to have an apprentice as a finalist every year, as we pride ourselves in giving apprentices diversity through internal training programmes and a site exchange program. "We are very proud of Angelo's achieve- ment and see him as a leader of the future and will be carefully managing his career so that all his aspirations are fulfilled." At the awards night, Angelo spoke of his early interest in printing. "I started out by applying for a guillotine apprenticeship," he said. "My skills were quickly recognised and I was offered a print- ing apprenticeship. The greatest challenge for me was switching over from sheet-fed to a reel-fed apprenticeship. I had to transfer the necessary skills, while adapting to a new form of printing." Angelo said that in the future he hoped to move into print management; mentoring was also high on his agenda.
