Digital takes centre stage Union seeks 'more clout' AUSTRALIAN journalists may join the public services union. The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) has con- firmed it is in the "early stages" of merger talks with the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU). MEAA secretary Chris Warren said the aim was to make the union stronger. "The attraction for us is being part of something bigger, to be stronger, to have more clout," he said. "We wouldn't expect the publish- ers to welcome a stronger union on their patches." CPSU National President, Michael Tull, told The Bulletin his organisation was in the "very early stages of the merger process" and both unions had "an in-principle agreement to investigate" the possibilities. "We both think the merger looks like a good idea but we have to do the work of how we'll do it," Mr Tull said. Mr Warren was more cautious. "Like everyone in the industry, we're looking at what our future is," he said. "One of the things we're looking at is whether we can look at becom- ing larger. "We've made decisions to explore it, but we haven't made a decision one way or the other." Mr Tull said that by the next CPSU meeting in September "we'd like to be able to report to all our delegates as to how we could bring a new union together". "In 2011 we'd turn our attention to the formal process of drafting rules, and going to Fair Work Australia," he said. Mr Warren said any merger would be done in consultation with MEAA members and would require a ballot. The MEAA's current membership was 17, 972, according to a spokesper- son, which would take a combined union to over 80,000 in membership. Mr Warren said the potential merger wasn't due to declining membership numbers though he was "conscious of what's happening in the industry". The MEAA represents profes- sions across the media, entertain- ment, sports and arts sectors. It was formed out of a merger in 1992 between Actors Equity (AE), the Australian Journalists Associa- tion (AJA) and the Australian The- atrical & Amusement Employees Association (ATAEA). Acknowledg- ing that there was some resistance from journalists to the first merger, Mr Warren said he expected there to be less resistance to a proposed merger this time around. "It's pretty unanimous now that the decision we made in the early 90s was the correct decision," he said. When asked about how a merg- er would affect MEAA initiatives like the Walkley awards, Mr War- ren said: "Anything we did would be about providing more services, not less." A major bank has just launched a serv- ice for customers to locate houses for rent and sale using an iPhone. The HouseFinder serv- ice, offered by St George, relies on a scary-sounding technology, augmented reality. The true reality is equally scary in its simplicity. Home buyers need only to launch free software on their iPhone, point the phone's camera towards a desirable street, and the technology identifies all homes for rent or sale, specifying the ad- dress, sale price, and agent. Additional information, such as the average price in the street or suburb, is also provided. St George Bank's House Finder goes further than any app for real estate, which usually offer house listings and maps with pins. Technology entrepreneur Nick Gonios, whose company Insqribe designed the software, said he would have liked a newspaper publisher to have taken up the technology to capitalise on its ability to attract readers and real estate agents. He said St George saw the po- tential in capturing young home buyers at the beginning of their home search, and integrating a home loan calculator into the iPhone experience, too. Mr Gonios has struck a con- tent partnership with Australian Property Monitors -- a company of Fairfax Media -- to provide the housing data for St George's service. "We are delivering functional value for the home buyer or rent- er," said Mr Gonios. "For St George, this is its biggest innovation for the year. The bank sees the value in making home-buying easier for their customers." "The next iteration of House Finder would offer images of the interior of the houses,"he said. "Similar software has gone live in America but our House Finder service is new for this part of the world,"he claimed.
