PANPA Bulletin February 2007 NEWS 10 Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) is spending Sing$48 million to replace and upgrade its second printing facil- ity at Media Centre in Genting Lane. The new pressline at Media Centre will replace the current two Urbanite presses which were installed more than 20 years ago. The main feature of the new facility is its full-colour capacity, bringing it in line with the newer presses at SPH’s main printing plant in Jurong. In addition to providing high-quality printing and colour reproduction, the new fully-automated pressline will be able to produce newspapers at a faster speed to reach readers earlier. Scheduled to be operational next year, Westminster City Council will ask for money from the publishers of free newspapers to deal with the cost of cleaning up discarded copies, accord- ing to a BBC Online report. Since the introduction of London Lite and thelondonpaper last year, the city council says it has to collect an extra 1000 tonnes of paper a year and wants publish- ers to help pay the bill. A council spokesman told the BBC that it had the power to ban the free distribution of literature in the area. “We want to collect more for recycling, but the investment required for the extra recycling bins and collections is substan- tial,” he said. “Due to limited space there would need to be a large number of smaller collection bins, which would need to be emptied at regular intervals throughout the evening.” The council said it had already set up bins to cope with the extra litter caused by the papers. The papers have a combined circulation of more than 300,000 copies a day. SPH upgrades Media Centre London council wants publishers to clean up BY JACK BEVERLEY Exploratory meetings to improve news- paper readership data have been held between The Newspaper Works, Australia’s recently formed newspaper mar- keting body, and Roy Morgan Research. The meetings are the frst stage of a major review begun in January examining how readership data is compiled, its breadth of detail and how the data is made available. The thrust of the review, in which the publishers are working with the advertis- ing industry and Morgan Research, is to improve the data, with a special focus on the growth of the online readership of mast- heads. An independent consultant is being appointed to advise on the project. The Newspaper Works CEO Tony Hale told the PANPA Bulletin that the frst meet- ings with Morgan Research had been pro- ductive. The setting up of a regular forum for the exchange of ideas as well as proc- esses for discussing concerns and resolving queries had been proposed. Early emphasis had been on how the current system of compiling data could be enhanced and better use made of data already being collected. The scope of the review was still being discussed with the major industry groups representing advertisers and media agen- cies. Members of the The Newspaper Works – News Limited, Fairfax Media, Rural Press, APN News and West Australian Newspapers – unanimously agreed to undertake the review late last year. It will examine the latest developments in audience measurement for all types of me- dia in Australia and internationally. “With rapid changes in media consump- tion and the increasing sophistication of media planning and buying, all media face new challenges to demonstrate their relevance, reach and value to advertis- ers,” said Hale. The review would look at how newspa- per data could be improved so publishers could provide advertisers with the most detailed picture of their audiences. It would also explore ways to make the data more accurate, informative, useful and authoritative. The depth with which readers engaged with newspapers and how this compared with other forms of media would also be examined. The second stage of the review would include extensive consultation with all parts of the industry including the Media Federa- tion of Australia, the Advertising Federation of Australia, the Australian Association of National Advertisers and the Magazine Publishers’ Association. “We have an open mind about what can be achieved in the second stage,” said Hale. “We think it vital that we work col- laboratively with the major advertiser and agency groups to achieve a strong consensus on the best way forward. “Our goal is to take the valued currency the industry uses today and ensure it is as good as anywhere in the world.” Newspaper Works meets with Roy Morgan The world’s second Ifra ISO Quality Certifcate has been awarded to Dar Al Yaum Press, a printing plant in Saudi Arabia. Dar Al Yaum Press production director Saad Al-Dossary said the certifcate is part of the company’s strategy to control and improve the quality of input materials and the output process. “The certifcate now gives us the op- portunity to clearly show our customers that we are heading towards joining the ranks of the world’s best printers,” he said. According the Ifra, the ISO Quality Cer- tifcate is an independent tool that certifes the reproduction process for newspapers and is based on the international standard ISO 12647-3. The certifcation program focuses on output resolution, plate register and screen angles in the pre-press area and on colour gamut, tonal value increase and register in the press area. The Hoekstra Boom, a printing plant in the Netherlands, was the frst company to receive the Ifra ISO Quality Certifcate. Ifra certifies Dar Al Yaum the new facility will comprise a pre-press system using Computer to Plate (CtP) technology by Kodak Polychrome Graphics Singapore, a UNISET printing pressline by Germany’s MAN Roland Druckmaschinen and a post-press mailroom system by Sweden’s IDAB WAMAC International. According to SPH, the CtP installation will add greater effciency to the printing process, as it eliminates the need to produce negative flm for platemaking The UNISET printing pressline will be able to produce up to 75,000 copies per hour; and the post-press system, with fully fully-automated conveying, counter- stacking and bundling lines, will be able to handle up to 90,000 copies an hour.
