Panpa Bulletin : February 2006
TWO of Australia's privately- owned publishing companies have linked up to strengthen their already strong positions in the community newspaper sec- tor of the NSW market. Under the new arrange- ments, the two organizations -- the Hannan family-run Feder- al Publishing Company and the Weston family's Kiama-based newspaper group - will operate as a new co-owned company, Southern Independent Publish- ers Pty Ltd. TheWeston's, publishers of the Kiama Independent, Lake Times and Northern Leader, control what is arguably the oldest con- tinuously-run family newspaper group in Australia, with a tradi- tion and history that dates back 142 years. The Hannan's run the coun- try's largest privately-owned print media group, dating back 118 years. As well as newspapers, the group produces many high quality consumer magazines. Both companies have fifth generation members working in the businesses. The Hannan family has in- vested in the Kiama operations through FPC Community Me- dia, part of the Independent Print Media Group (IPMG). While the newly-formed Southern Independent Publish- ers company now owns and publishes the Kiama mastheads, the Weston family, through their print company, Weston Print, will continue to produce the publications locally. The Kiama press line is used extensively by overseas publish- ers to print titles that range from the Guardian Weekly, Lloyd's List DCN, the Scottish Daily Record and the New Zealander. Under the terms of the deal that has been struck between the two publishing families, the Weston's will concentrate on de- veloping their printing business and FPC will manage and de- velop the publishing businesses, with ongoing input from the We- ston family. FPC Community Media's extensive range of titles target Sydney's CBD and surrounding suburbs, as well as the upper and lower North Shore, eastern south eastern suburbs and in- ner west and western suburbs, as well as the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Its publications include the highly-profitable Wentworth Courier, Southern Courier, In- ner City Courier, Inner Western Courier, Sydney Weekly Courier, 9TO5, and City Weekly. The Queensland titles include the Weekender, Weekender Noo- sa and Weekender Nambour/ Coolum. Announcing the new business relationship with the Weston family, Michael Hannan, IPMG group managing director, said he believed that the combined value both companies placed on tradition and heritage would ensure the continued success of the Kiama-based company. "The Weston family has built an incredibly strong and com- mitted newspaper business and FPC Community Media hopes to add value through our skills and resources leading up to The Kiama Independent's 150th an- niversary". He said the "passionate in- volvement" of both families in their businesses was due to their commitment to their own local communities. This hands-on management had ensured the ongoing success and sustain- ability of both businesses. The inserting drums in the MultiSertDrum family are multitalented in every sense of the word.
